Sitagliptin/Metformin is a combination medication used to control blood sugar levels in adult patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. It contains sitagliptin, a DPP-4 inhibitor, and metformin, a biguanide, which work together to increase insulin levels after a meal and reduce sugar production in the body.

Important points to remember:

  • Do not use Sitagliptin/Metformin if you are allergic to its ingredients, have severely reduced kidney function, uncontrolled diabetes, severe infections, dehydration, severe circulatory problems, liver problems, recent heart attack, or consume excess alcohol.
  • Precautions should be taken as there have been cases of pancreatitis and bullous pemphigoid reported. Watch for signs of throat tightness, swelling, fainting, or breathing difficulties and stop the medication if such symptoms occur.
  • Inform your doctor about any history of pancreas disease, gallstones, alcohol dependence, high triglyceride levels, type 1 diabetes, or allergic reactions to similar medications.
  • Be cautious about potential drug interactions with other medicines, and your doctor may need to adjust the dosage or perform additional tests.
  • Take one tablet twice daily by mouth with meals to reduce the chances of an upset stomach. Dosage adjustments may be necessary for patients with reduced kidney function.
  • Store Sitagliptin/Metformin below 30°C and keep it out of reach of children. Do not use the medicine after the expiry date mentioned on the blister and carton.

Description

Sitagliptin/Metformin is a medication used to control blood sugar levels in adult patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. It is a combination of two active ingredients: sitagliptin, which belongs to the class of DPP-4 inhibitors, and metformin, which belongs to the class of biguanides. These two medicines work together to increase insulin levels after a meal and reduce the production of sugar by the body.

It is important not to use Sitagliptin/Metformin if you are allergic to sitagliptin, metformin, or any of the other ingredients in the medicine. Additionally, the medication should not be used if you have severely reduced kidney function, uncontrolled diabetes with symptoms like severe hyperglycemia, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, rapid weight loss, lactic acidosis, or ketoacidosis. It should also be avoided if you have severe infections, dehydration, severe circulatory problems, liver problems, recent heart attack, or if you drink alcohol to excess.

Certain precautions should be taken while using Sitagliptin/Metformin. There have been reported cases of inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis) in patients receiving this medicine. If you experience blistering of the skin, it may be a sign of a condition called bullous pemphigoid, and you should consult your doctor. There is also a risk of lactic acidosis with this medication.

Before taking this medicine, inform your doctor if you have or have had a disease of the pancreas, gallstones, alcohol dependence, very high levels of triglycerides in your blood, or type 1 diabetes. Also, let your doctor know if you have had an allergic reaction to sitagliptin, metformin, or if you are taking other diabetes medicines like sulphonylureas or insulin.

If you experience throat tightness, swelling of the eyes, face, lips, or tongue, fainting, or difficulty breathing, stop using the product and seek immediate medical attention. Similarly, if you develop hives or itching of the face or body, stop using the product.

It is essential to inform your doctor about any other medicines you are taking, including those obtained without a prescription. Certain medications may interact with Sitagliptin/Metformin, and your doctor may need to adjust the dosage or perform more frequent blood glucose and kidney function tests.

The recommended dosage is one tablet twice daily by mouth with meals to minimize the chances of an upset stomach. Your doctor may adjust the dose as needed to control your blood sugar, especially if you have reduced kidney function.

Store Sitagliptin/Metformin below 30°C and keep it out of the sight and reach of children. Do not use the medicine after the expiry date mentioned on the blister and carton.
